Do you have an Uncle George on your Christmas list?

        By Leah Morris

It seems that everyone has at least one person on their Christmas list that is hard to buy for or has everything they’d ever need…so what do you get for them this year?  That’s my Uncle George!Uncle George lives in the big white house on the hill, all alone except for his Siamese cat, Sally. He wears brown tweed suits and carries a wooden cane he bought in Africa. He doesn’t use the cane for walking as much as for keeping the dogs away when he takes his morning constitutional at 6 am sharp. He also uses his cane to emphasize his point and to keep all his nieces and nephews in line. I got tapped with his cane when I flippantly answered one of his questions.

“Mark, my boy,” he said. “What are your plans for the Christmas Holiday?”

“Don’t know,” I said. “Guess I’ll just hang out with my friends and have some fun.” I should have known that that answer would get me into trouble with Uncle George. “Fun?” he said, tapping me on the head. “Life isn’t for fun. It’s for working hard and getting ahead. You have to make some solid plans for your future or else you just end up wasting your life.”

With that he launched into his favorite lecture, the one I’d heard a thousand times, the one about “I made my first million by the time I was 35. That was because I made a plan and I stuck to it. No, it wasn’t easy but it was the right thing to do.”  Blah, blah, blah.

My mind wandered to the Christmas gift I’d picked out for Uncle George. He already has everything he needs and is so darned particular; he’s hard to buy for. I remember one year I bought him a leopard steering wheel cover. I thought that it would look classy in that old Cadillac he drives and besides it would keep his hands warm. But he informed me that he always used driving gloves, and that he believed that the fur would have looked better on the leopard.

But this year I have found something special, something so unique that I am sure that he will love it. You see, even though Uncle George acts a little cantankerous at times, his nieces and nephews adore him. He’s the one who has the time to come to all of our activities. He’s there at our plays, our recitals, even our dance contests. But what we love most about Uncle George is the fact that he comes, rain or shine, to every sporting event any of us are involved in. You can hear his deep, booming voice cheering us on or cussing out the referee for some bad call that he’d made.

So when I found these comfortable chairs, not just any chairs mind you, but nifty outdoor ones with a canopy on them, I knew that I had to get one for Uncle George. Now he can come to all of our outdoor games and be comfy no matter what the weather is like. No more toting around his big black umbrella, just in case it rains or is too hot.  The only problem I had was that once I had found the canopy chairs, I couldn’t decide which one to buy. The link to CanopyComfort.com that I found on the internet brought up a display of many interesting canopy chairs. I liked them all. I was glad to see that they were light weight, easy to carry and set up, and really sturdy. That’s a big plus for Uncle George now that he’s in his 70’s and not as spry as he used to be.  I finally decided on getting Uncle George the Tent Chair.  It’ll keep out the sun, the rain, and even the wind. They had lots of colors available, even a cool camouflage one, but knowing Uncle George; he’ll just like the plain ol’ blue one.

“Uh, sure, Uncle George,” I said as I became aware that he was waiting for an answer.

Uncle George smiled, tapped me again and said, “You weren’t even listening, you were miles away.”

Yep, this year I have the perfect gift for my favorite uncle. He’ll enjoy watching all his “kids” from the comfort of a canopy chair, no matter what the weatherman predicts.
